Berkeley Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

8-Week Course in Conscious Living (developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn)

Starts: Wednesday July 31st at 6:30pm

Ends: Wednesday September 18th at 9pm

What is MBSR?

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is an evidence-based, life-affirming course in conscious living. Backed by science, and adopted in medical centers and healthcare settings around the world, MBSR has been shown to help with numerous challenges including, but not limited to: 

  • Stress 

  • Anxiety and worry 

  • Chronic pain   

  • Sleep disturbance 

  • Hypertension 

  • Headaches 

  • Grief and loss

And to promote:

  • Higher levels of awareness

  • Well-being

  • And thriving

The course schedule consists of eight weekly 2.5 hour classes and one daylong class on a weekend. This highly participatory, practical course includes:

  • Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation that is open to people at all levels of experience

  • Gentle stretching and mindful movement

  • Exercises to enhance awareness thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns in everyday life 

  • Individually tailored instruction 

  • Group discussion

  • Daily assignments and practices

  • Guided audio files for home practice, a workbook, and a personal copy of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s book Full Catastrophe Living 

The course is challenging and life-affirming. The instructor is trained and experienced in creating a safe, supportive, and deeply engaging learning environment that allows participants to seek, explore, and inquire. 

In this program, you will learn:

  • Key aspects of mindfulness as it relates to stress reduction, coping with pain and illness, and enhancing well-being

  • How MBSR is different from relaxation and other distraction techniques that may seem similar but are fundamentally different when it comes to dealing with difficulty and enhancing quality of life

  • How to apply and practice mindfulness techniques in both personal and professional settings as a way to deal more effectively with stressors and difficulties present in everyday life

  • How to integrate mindfulness into social interactions to facilitate more effective and mindful communication

  • Some of the science (including neuroscience) behind mindfulness and the practices being taught

  • Class 1 - July 31st, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 2 - August 7th, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 3 - August 14th, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 4 - August 21st, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 5 - August 28th, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 6 - September 4th, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 7 - September 11th, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • Class 8 - September 18th, 2019 from 6:30-9pm

  • All day retreat - Saturday September 7th, 2019 from 9am-4:30pm
